Looney Tunes TV: A RECENT HISTORY
-by Matthew Hunter
Prior to 1999, one could see Warner Brothers classic
animation almost anywhere. Local channels, cable channels, network channels, all
of which too numerous to name, were constantly airing the wide variety of
cartoons that were created between 1930 and 1969, and many cartoons were
ultimately made for television in the early 80's. This changed in 1999 and 2000,
as the three remaining television outlets for WB Looney Tunes and Merrie
Melodies (The WB network, Nickelodeon, and ABC network) gave up their rights to
air their successful showings of the cartoons, and all of the shorts went to
Cables' Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network, or the "CN" as some call it,
owned by Turner entertainment and most recently by Aol/Time Warner, is now the
only place to see these films, and the results, while mixed, are very good on
average. Frequent, long showings compensate for the enormous number of cartoons
that would normally be impossible to see in one place with weekly or random
airplay. These cartoons have gotten good ratings, too, the weekday prime time
"Bugs and Daffy" program as of February 2001 helped CN become the 3rd
most-watched cable network for prime
time.
WHAT THIS PAGE IS FOR:
The following is a series of
lists, currently of the ABC , WB and Nickelodeon packages, which includes what
Cartoon Network has aired at this point, and what they have not from each group.
This will be updated accordingly, whenever something airs.
| ABC Network
package:
Beginning on October 1st, 2000, The Warner Brothers cartoons that were originally run on ABC began airing on the Cartoon Network's "Bugs and Daffy" show. . For the record, the first of these to debut on CN was the Claude Cat and Frisky Puppy cartoon, "Terrier Stricken". By August of 2001, this was the first package of Warner cartoons in which every single cartoon aired, although it was also the most drawn-out and delayed...It took them until June to air all of the Bugs Bunny cartoons, and 3 Tweety cartoons, "Tweet Dreams", "A Bird in a Bonnet" and "Trick or Tweet" didn't show up until well after that.
|
-"Weasel While You Work"(1958) can now be seen with original credits. The
Weasel appeared in somewhere around 3 cartoons, all while chasing Foghorn
Leghorn. Usually, the little guy doesn't harm Foghorn directly, but he does
cause chaos that leads to some nasty experiences for the chicken. This
particular appearance is unusual in that it has no original music, instead it
uses stock music from elsewhere, composed/cobbled together by John Seely. This
was due to a musician's strike that Milt Frankllin must have been involved in at
the time.

The Nickelodeon cable package: "Gopher Goofy" "Hop and Go" "Snow Excuse","Swing Ding
Amigo", "Rodent To Stardom", "Chili Corn Corny",
"Mexican Mousepiece" , Fiesta Fiasco","Go Away
Stowaway", "Go Go Amigo", "Speedy Ghosts
To Town", "Quacker Tracker", "Spy Swatter",
"A Squeak In The Deep", Road To Andalay", Daffy's
Diner", "The Wild Chase", "Tortilla Flaps". Now Cartoon Network seems to have aired everything from this
package that they're going to, at least that will get aired regularly. We
can now narrow it down to this list, and most of these are stuff CN tends
to avoid, like cartoons with Indians, the Speedy Gonzales series, rare and
unusual cartoons, and very old Black-and-White cartoons. The Black and
Whites from Nick featuring Porky Pig have been handled very well, many
have been shown on the prime time shows, and a whole ton in late-night
series like "Acme Hours" and "Late Night Black and White." Many others
have been shown in computer colorized form and have been aired
constantly.Very few Speedy Gonzales cartoons have been shown, those that
have are included in the above list. This is due to Ted Turner's and other
CN heads' opinions that Speedy is too controversial and stereotypical of
Mexicans. According to one of CN's head editors, Daniel Wineman: "I can
tell you that we are making an effort to show some Speedy cartoons in the
near future. We are in the middle of re-reviewing the Speedy cartoons with
the higher ups and we'll see what comes of it." The list of
"haven't-been-played" toons is as
follows.
|
-"Sugar and Spies", one of the few Roadrunner cartoons directed by
Robert McKimson, (all during the DePatie/Freleng reopening after 1964) was in
the Nickelodeon package, and mysteriously debuted on CN almost one full
year after Nick ended their show. The same thing happened to "Tree For Two", a
Sylvester cartoon from the 1950's.
"Feline Frameup"(1954), a Chuck Jones classic that did not get near as much play as it deserved on Nickelodeon, has proved itself a near-overplayed cartoon on CN. And why not, it's a great cartoon.
| Other
cartoons: This list is from the Unofficial LT/MM page with several notes added by me. These cartoons were recieved by Cartoon Network from Warner Bros. in 1997. You will notice several Speedy Gonzales cartoons in this list, as well as stuff like "Tom Tom Tomcat" and "Horse Hare", which have not been seen often at all. Most of the Speedy cartoons stopped airing in 1998, and "Tomcat" has not been seen since around early 1999. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CN HAS AIRED: "A-Haunting We Will Go" with Daffy Duck, Speedy Gonzales and Daffy's nephew "A-Lad-in His Lamp" with Bugs Bunny and Smokey Genie "Ant Pasted" * With Elmer Fudd and the ants "Aqua Duck" with Daffy Duck "Assault and Peppered" with Daffy and Speedy "Backwoods Bunny" With Bugs Bunny, Pappy and Elvis "Bad Ol' Putty Tat" with sylvester and Tweety "Ballot Box Bunny" * With Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam "Banty Raids" with Foghorn Leghorn "Barbary Coast Bunny" with Bugs Bunny and Nasty Canasta "Bartholomew Versus the Wheel" "Beanstalk Bunny" with Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Elmer Fudd "Bear Feat" with the 3 bears "Bedevilled Rabbit" with Bugs Bunny and Taz "The Bee-Deviled Bruin" with the 3 bears "Big Top Bunny" with Bugs Bunny "Bill of Hare" with bugs Bunny and Taz "Birds of a Father" with sylvester and son "Blooper Bunny" with Bugs, Daffy, Elmer Fudd, yosemite Sam "A Bone For a Bone" with the Goofy Gophers "Boobs in the Woods" with Daffy Duck and Porky Pig "A Broken Leghorn" with Foghorn Leghorn "Bugs Bonnets" with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd "Bugsy and Mugsy" with Bugs Bunny, Rocky and Mugsy "Bully For Bugs" with Bugs Bunny and El Toro the bull "Bunker Hill Bunny" with Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam "Bye, Bye Bluebeard" with Porky Pig "Canary Row" with Sylvester, Tweety and Granny "Cat Feud" * with Marc Antony, Pussyfoot and Claude Cat "Cats and Bruises" with Speedy Gonzales and Sylvester "Catty Cornered" * with Sylvester, Tweety, and Rocky "Cheese Chasers" with Claude Cat, Hubie and Bertie, and Marc Antony "Cheese It- the Cat!" | TURNER TOONS
The pre-1948 cartoons have been on the Turner networks
since 1985, when Turner bought to Associated Artists TV distribution
sompany's selection if cartoons and films (see
HERE).. I have tried to provide a complete and accurate list, but if
you actually care and don't want to trust me on this one, the chriteria
were as follows in case I accidentally included or excluded something:
Turner owned what was sold to AAP (Associated Artists Productions): All
B&W Harman-Ising Merrie Melodies (except "Lady Play Your
Mandolin");All color cartoons up to "Haredevil
Hare"(1948).

That's all Folks!
