Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies Spotlight Archive

(1968, Merrie Melodies)
This cartoon is considered by many Warner cartoon fans to be one of the better 1960's Daffy/Speedy Gonzales pairups. It is the only one in which Daffy and Speedy are best pals. This cartoon is not without flaws, though. Its limited animation quality and gangly, choppy character designs are often off-putting. Anyway, Speedy Gonzales sees Daffy walking down the road sleepwalking, and offers to keep him from doing it again for a fee. Daffy agrees, and Speedy sets up a little cowbell on a string, for Daffy to trip over when he tries to walk out of bed. it works, he wakes up, and the duck pays the mouse accordingly. The two go to sleep, Daffy in his bed and Speedy on the chair next to him. Daffy starts to sleepwalk again, but he walks out on the opposite side of the bed, missing the bell. When Speedy wakes up and realizes Daffy's gone, he finds the duck sleepwalking up the frame of a skyscraper. A predictable series of accident-and-rescue gags ensues, climaxing in Speedy rescuing Daffy with a hangman's noose, and Daffy falling from the top and hitting flagpoles, canopies, window ledges and other junk on the way down. Speedy catches the now-unconscious Daffy in a wheelbarrow and takes him back home. Daffy wakes up, and thinks it was all a dream.
